Manchester United's 2006

Manchester United will enter 2007 on top of the premiership after they steered 4 points clear of Chelsea after they boxing day blue. They were held 2-2 by Reading thanks to a 85th minute own goal by Essien. Unable to come back for the third time in as many games, they gave United the chance to pull clear.

United did just that with a super-sub like no other.

Cristiano Ronaldo started on the bench but came on in the second half to score a two-goal brace in the space of six minutes. His first came with a power blast header from a Paul Scholes corner and his second came after he converted a rebound of his own penalty after Park Ji-Sung was fouled in the box. The game was wrapped up after Wayne Rooney's pass was latched on by vetran Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to make it 3-0. Although Baines put away a last minute penalty for Wigan, United steered 4 clear of Chelsea. It is a bitter blow for Mourinho since his prediction that Chelsea will top the table at the turn of the year was deamed inaccurate and the thought that his captain John terry might have to go for surgery, putting him out of action for almost a month.

Despite what happens in the weekend when Reading visit Old Trafford, Manchester United will face Newcastle on top of the primership.

Elsewhere, Liverpool was condemned to another away defeat, this time at Blackburn. Benni MaCarthy netted his double over Liverpool in their 1-0 win at Ewood Park. Arsenal bolted up to third with a magical Van Persie giving them a 2-1 win at hard fighting Watford.

Newsvine:

Adu set for United trail
Freddy Adu is set for a trail at Manchester United in November. After earlier rejecting claims that they were approaching Adu, they have confirmed that they are attempting to bring him for a trail in England. Adu admitted that he would like to play in the premiership for united or Chelsea. And he would probably be at Old Trafford to watch the two teams battle it out on the 26th of November.
A tip for Adu, from me, don't make the wrong choice. John Obi Mikel signed for united then turned to join chelsea. And now? he's benched. Man U can develop young talent. They have shown it.

Becks on target
Beckham scored finally in the kings cup as Real qualified 5-1. Beckham opened the scoring while Ronaldo scored real's third which was sandwiched between Ruud's double.

Owen Hargreaves could complete his dream move to United provided Bayern can sign Emre as his replacement. Owen Hargreaves' dream move was put on hold after Bayern stood their ground in August. However, reports have claimed that United has been told to stop their pursuit or be reported to FIFA and risk a potential band from the Transfer Market.

After being dropped from the squad due to injury, Carlo Cudicini has been said to have confronted Mourinho.

Baines on united shopping list
Manchester United have put another left back on the shopping list with Baines the most shocking one. Other targets are Owen Hargreaves, Fernando Torres and Klass Jan Huntelaar.
